“Ephemeral” is a series of black and white photographs of Van Cortlandt Park. It is a park that Mr. Merritt has lived next to his whole life. The series began on Thanksgiving Day in 2010 photographing a cross - country race in the park (turkey run). The original theme was to illustrate changes in the park with each season, however, over time the focus evolved into the photographer’s interest in finding images that evoke memories and feelings that would appeal to anyone who has spent any time in a city park. In order to transport the viewer into the realm of the subconscious many of the images have a soft quality effect. Mr. Merritt jolts us back to reality with “sharp” images (Hopscotched) to let us know that these are images of real people and tangible nature which are present now but will vanish quickly. Along with the Ephemeral Exhibit a slide show has been prepared by Mr. Merrit he calls: v.c.p./in four parts. Mr. Merritt dedicated ten years to making images of Van Cortlandt Park. Part One: color camera-less images of the plants of the park, which he calls Photosynthesis. Part Two: black and white series that preceded Ephemeral that are minimalist photo images, which he has named: Approaching Winter. Part Three: a grid series of images of natural patterns of the park. Part Four: an expanded look at Ephemeral.
